“Imagine how would it feel to be pushed out of your comfort zone only for one day. Far away from everything you know and everything you own. Arriving to a new country is always full of challenges; even more if you have been forced to leave everything behind in your homeland. For refugees this is a daily struggle. They are put in a much regulated environment, confined into a system with almost no freedom, separated from their families and going through conditions that they have never faced before. They are socio-culturally, economically and spatially isolated from the “welcoming society”. The drama of the refugees definitely does not stop when they reach the “welcoming” countries. … “For integration, you need to have open doors”, often says Okbaab Tesfamariam during the tours. Considering this situation, Okbaab, in collaboration with Architecture for Refugees SCHWEIZ, started a series of guided city tours known as “Stadtführung – Zürich mit den Augen eines Flüchtlings / Walking tour – Zürich through the eyes of a refugee” in Switzerland to learn and understand our built environment and its influence on our daily life and on inclusion or exclusion.”
After the walking tour, we will also invite you for an open discussion with intercultural apéro and music at the FOGO areal. We will have the opportunity to talk with the architects of the FOGO. Please do not hesitate to bring some food or drink that is typical in your origin culture. Besides your food and drinks, Jafar’s kitchen will also offer some lovely finger foods from the grill. Roshan Silva will provide a super nice music to inspire all of us.
The walking tour is on the 1st day of our City in Transition Festival (24 September 2019). For the whole program please check the full week Facebook event:https://www.facebook.com/events/903190906740955/?active_tab=about.
